J.P. Morgan was quoted as saying, “Millionaires don’t use astrology, billionaires do.”
The practice of counseling can be mystified in the way that astrology has been. It does not eliminate the value because good counsel is neuroscience meets art with a dash of personal expression. As a thought experiment I often share the J.P. Morgan statement with clients in both clinical and corporate settings. The feedback and conversations can range from definitely yes, to never ever. I would suggest both of these cognitive distortions are correct.
However, two threads will appear if we focus our attention on these polarizing responses. The first idea is that our faith will need to be tested to become better, to heal or to grow. These things are rarely seen and lesser known to others. The second idea is that there is an underlying fear. Fear of what I need to give up, or fear of what I will become if I am wrong. Either way, if you never test your faith there is a strong commitment being made to fear. A life of always waiting for the perfect moment, the extra thing, perfect relationship and so on. That is much like any addiction to a maladaptive behavior like drugs, sex, alcohol, porn, gambling, lying, cheating, stealing, abusing, neglecting etc. My experiences in recovery, combat, and business suggest that being daring is more valuable than being perfect. When people start advocating for themself it naturally draws the right energy forces and people. The universe tends to help us out. Maybe this is the astrology part J.P. Morgan was inferring.
If you’re struggling to test your faith and fear, consider that it might not be the time to confront either. When you feel ready my recommendation would be to make a big bet on your neurology and test your belief in this planet. This includes self, others and the world around you, even when things look bleak. Asking for help is that first step to health and wealth. That is often our most telling moment. When we process and accept the gravity of the situation we quickly realize that nobody is driving spaceship earth. You might as well grab the wheel for a bit.
Our dreams feel real when we are in them.
