The practice of therapy has been going on for an estimated 3500 years. We can assume the ancient Greeks and Egyptians were in the business of war, building things, innovation and healing. “Healing through words,” is how therapy has been noted repeatedly through civilization. What is written about in mythology and poems has been loneliness. For example, the Greek tragedy of King Minos is a good example on the topic of loneliness. He lived in constant lies that isolated him from others. Everything about him had to be kept secret. The more lies he told, the more lies he had to make up to cover his multitude of secrets. In Egyptian mythology, the deity Atum created the first deities out of loneliness.
In the modern day, it is estimated that between 20 and 30 percent of adults report experiencing loneliness. There are numerous factors that influence these percentages. However, one in five is alarming.
The CDC says people can combat loneliness by:
- Spending more time with family and friends
- Joining a group or club related to an interest or hobby
- Spending time with others in nature
- Expressing gratitude to others
- Volunteering with community organizations
- Getting to know the neighbors
